Croatian Academy of Engineering was established on January 19th, 1993 and registered by the Ministry of Justice and Administration of the Republic of Croatia on January 25th 1993. Due to the Law on HAZU (Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts) and decision of the Croatian Parliament dated June 27th, 1997, the Croatian Academy of Engineering changed its Croatian name from “Hrvatska akademija tehničkih znanosti” into “Akademija tehničkih znanosti Hrvatske”. After years of working in leased offices, the Academy moved to own recently restored premises in 28 Kačić Street in 2004.
In 2009 the Academy acquired the status of scientific organization (and not association). It has been established as non-governmental, independent, non-political and non-profit association of notable and experienced scientists in the field of engineering and biotechnology.
Up to now four Presidents of the Academy have been elected, i.e. Academician Josip Božičević (1993 – 1997), Prof. Juraj Božičević, Ph.D. (1997 – 2003), Prof. emer. Zlatko Kniewald, Ph.D. (2003 – 2009) and Prof. Stanko Tonković, Ph.D. (2009 – 2013).
